It can be an exciting time when you have a teen driver in the house, but it’s also a time when you have to set strong ground rules and really know the laws. That way you can protect your teen as much as possible and teach them to be safe on the road. Those are both very important parts of being a parent, and they’re worth considering and learning about. California Drivers Ed is one of the best ways for you and your teen driver to be prepared, but it’s about more than basic traffic laws. Your teen also needs to understand the driving curfews, so they don’t violate the law by accident simply be being out of the house too late.

Getting a License at 16 Doesn’t Mean Ultimate Freedom

There aren’t too many restrictions for teen drivers, but one of the most important ones is the curfew. For the first 12 months after earning their license, teens aren’t allowed to be on the roads between 11pm and 5am. There are exceptions for teens who work late or early shifts, though. If they have a signed statement from their employer about the hours they’re working, they’re legal to be on the road because the reason they’re out is valid and important. Without the statement, they could be ticketed. Even though there’s an online traffic school for ticket dismissal, it’s better and easier to avoid the ticket in the first place.

Keep in mind that it’s not just for 16-year-old drivers. Since the curfew is in effect for the first 12 months after a license is earned, someone who’s 17 when they get their license will still have a curfew to contend with. Age isn’t the main reason for the curfew being dropped or not in effect unless someone doesn’t get their license until they’re already out of their teenage years. At that point, they wouldn’t need to worry about the curfew or the teen driving laws, even though they’re a new driver.

Passenger Requirements Are Important, Too

It’s not just about the curfews when it comes to what’s acceptable for teen drivers. They also must be careful who they have in the car with them, since they can’t have passengers under 20 years old for the first 12 months. Just like with the curfew rules, though, there are exceptions. If someone in the car is over 25, then there can be other people in the car who are under 20. That makes it legal for a teen driver to take one of their parents somewhere along with their younger siblings, for example. The goal is to reduce distractions, which can be especially bad for drivers who don’t have a lot of experience on the roads yet.

Will the Curfew Be Changed?

There are plans and attempts to change laws all the time, and the teen driving curfew in California is no exception. One lawmaker in 2017 lost his 20-year-old daughter in a car crash and introduced legislation that would keep the curfew and other requirements for teen drivers in place until they turned 21, instead of just for the first 12 months after they received their license. Opponents of this change argue that it’s too intrusive for people who work and go to school, for example, or who have other obligations that require them to drive between the hours of 11pm and 5am. Whether or not the law gets changed, though, it’s very important that you and your teen driver know and understand the information that California Drivers Ed offers so the laws can be followed properly.

Right Now, Drivers Still Have Their Jobs

The idea of automation taking over driving jobs isn’t a new one. There are currently automated cars being tested out by Google and other companies. While there have been accidents and problems, the technology continues to be worked on. In time, it’s possible that driverless cars could become much more common. When that happens, there will be a lot more jobs lost. There will also be the risk of an accident between these cars and those that are still piloted by drivers. It’s clear that the current laws will need to be adjusted as automation takes over more cars and trucks on the road in the future.

How Much of the Automation is Really Expected?

There are all kinds of estimates about automation and driverless cars. That’s unfortunate for them and for the families that they take care of, and it can make communities less stable because fewer people in them will be able to support themselves.

Those Who Drive Should Take Note of Automation

For anyone who drives on California roads, taking note of automation is very important. Whether there’s the chance that automation will take their job as a driver, or whether automation could result in an accident with a driverless car, it’s important that drivers know the laws, rules, and requirements in their state. California can already claim one of its own regions as the most traffic-congested in the nation, certainly not due to lack of the residents going to traffic school online. Los Angeles and the surrounding area’s dreadfully perfect combination of limited rail infrastructure and public transit systems, heavy driving culture, and sheer local and commuter population size all contribute to the hour-long drive to work (even though many morning commutes are under 6 miles). The cityis so jam-packed with single-passenger vehicles to the point that taking public transportation is almost taboo.

It comes as no surprise, then, that California, particularly due to the densely populated Los Angeles county region, has a long history of terrible automobile accidents. There were 3,435 traffic-related deaths in 2015 with motorists dying every day in southern California alone. While efforts are being made to alleviate traffic and minimize the number of vehicles on the road, the problematic area has a long way to go before it can help lower the amount of automobile deaths it contributes to the state’s record.

With the above statistics in mind, and with a heavy concentration on the southern part of the state, here are some of the worst accidents in the Golden State’s history.

November 29, 1991 – Interstate 5

A massive 93-car pileup, including 11 semi-trucks/big rigs occurred about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco on the state’s main north-south freeway during a traffic rush around Thanksgiving. Drivers blamed poor visibility due to dense fog and breezes of loose dirt during the drought season. Warped, charred, and crunched metal littered the scene as highway patrol officers shut down a 150-mile portion of the freeway, reporting that the accident claimed 17 lives; some of the victims burned so badly it would take days to identify them.

November 3, 2002 – Los Angeles

An early morning fog hung thick over the 710 freeway south of Los Angeles, causing a semi-truck to crash into the center concrete divider and begin a whopping 216-car collision over a two-mile stretch of highway. While injuries were reported, there were surprisingly no fatalities, only a daunting, expensive cleanup, a highway shutdown, and a long list of auto insurance claims.

November 3, 2007 – Fresno

Another dense seasonal fog caused poor visibility of about two feet, resulting in a 100-car pileup injuring a few dozen and leaving a 5-year-old boy and a 26-year-old man dead on highway 99. Though nowhere near the beginning or end of incidents like this, these driving conditions demonstrate a trend in California’s seasonal accident rates. California’s coastal regions form thick fogs in the fall and winter months, greatly increasing the accident rate for that time of year.

While the accidents explained above are only a few specific incidents, California (and again, southern California) is plagued with an above-average rate of automobile accidents and fatalities. Alongside the 3,435 automobile fatalities in 2015, 254,561 drivers were injured. The two highest age groups for fatalities were young; 15-24 and 25-36, with a total of 1,354 deaths that year.

Some accidents and conditions are beyond the control of the driver. But in especially unsafe conditions, particularly those mentioned above, it is never unreasonable to wait out the weather. Take your time! Find a coffee shop nearby and play it safe; make a mini destination out of it. California’s beautiful highways and long coastal stretches allow for a plethora of interesting tourist stops and destinations along the way to your final stop.

July 15th to 17th, 2011 marked the days where the cars stood still. The doomsday that prophets foretold didn’t come in the form of the world ending, but the ending to clustered commuting in Los Angeles. This prolific day would go down in California history and be discussed in California Drivers Ed courses for ages.

This day would be known as Carmageddon.

Apocalyptic analogies aside, Carmageddon was the result of a massive road reconstruction project on the 405 freeway in Los Angeles. The intense need to widen the popular highway reached a breaking point. Commuters could expect to spend anywhere from 1 to 2 hours in gridlocked traffic during peak rush hours. This resulted in meltdowns, outrages, and despair for all who used this road.

That’s when the idea of a massive infrastructure improvement was created.

What the People Paid For

The plan was simple. The city would close the 405 freeway for the weekend and perform massive reconstruction. The highway project would add an additional lane for 10-miles in hopes of clearing up the congestion. The added lane would allow the highway to hold more traffic and, theoretically, allow it to flow smoother.

On any given weekend, the 405 could carry upwards to 500,000 vehicles. Maintaining the well-being of the 4-lanes was a massive undertaking and required a massive budget to do so. In the end, the price tag for this project was estimated to reach $1 billion.

The city didn’t have this money laying around.

The budget was financed by the taxpayers’ dollars. The city of Los Angeles was able to fund the project and close the entire highway for the 10-mile stretch for the weekend. This decision is what started the doomsday-like traffic congestion that plagued the surrounding roads, big and small, for miles.

Not only did the taxpayers have to front the bill for a weekend of clogged roads, but they had to finance the additional services that came from this construction project. Crime and health accidents don’t stop for road construction. The cost of police patrol, paramedics, and other car-based city services spiked from the infrastructure project.

The project sparked a bit of controversy, aside from the impending sense of doom from traffic.

Most roads in Los Angeles are in poor condition. Potholes, cracks, and weathered conditions make driving in the city a nightmare for cars. Any moment, you could blow a tire from hitting a chunk of cement protruding from the under kept road. Taxpayers are still paying the bill for Carmageddon, yet everyone is still feeling the wrath of the poor city infrastructure. After spending $1 billion on one lane of highway, the city still finds itself struggling with its infrastructure.

The Obvious Downfalls and the Hidden Benefits

The doomsday wasn’t all bad, however. There wasn’t much of an immediate positive return from adding one extra lane of traffic to the 405, but the city did stumble upon something interesting. The city, for a weekend, felt a little different.

The beaches were emptier, the air was cleaner, and more people than ever chose to stay home. For once, Los Angeles lost its high intensity flair rush and, instead, took a deep breath. Air and light pollution levels in the city reached a record low for that year. For one weekend in Los Angeles, people got to experience what life would be like if there weren’t tens of thousands of people commuting down the 405.

Sure, Carmageddon had cost the city $1 billion, but, in the end, it might have learned an important value of just breathing.

California is among the states with the most courthouses in the country. With over 500 courthouses across 58 counties, they are dishing out justice to hard criminals and maintaining the laws of liberty. Without our courts, the injustices of the world and unlawful settlements would run rampant across the state.

At least that’s what we would like to think is happening behind those regal court doors.

Most of the hardball court criminals are involved in traffic-related incidents. Handled inside of a traffic court, these culprits make their persuasive arguments about wrongly being ticketed, which, most of the time, ends the same: a quick dismissal, an inevitable fine payment, and a request to enroll in traffic school. It’s like clockwork.

The cases most often heard in front of a judge pertain to violations of a motor vehicle or traffic law. A few examples of these common hearings deal with speeding, illegal parking, reckless driving, driving while intoxicated or under the influence of a substance (DWI/DUI.) With a plethora of drivers on the California roads (places infamous for driving), you can easily predict the sheer volume of court visits. In case you can’t, it’s an enormous amount of cases seen daily.

Between 2015 to 2016 alone, there were roughly 4 million traffic-related misdemeanors and infractions filed in CA courts. You can imagine how many people walked through those court doors. With so many people attending court because of the traffic, which courts pump out the most cases in California?

San Francisco Hall of Justice

If you’ve ever driven through San Francisco, you understand why there are so many traffic violation related cases for the city. The San Francisco Hall of Justice is the primary court used to handle traffic-related crimes. Therefore, it gets the bulk of the myriad of violators. If you thought the roads in San Francisco were bumpy, the traffic cases are worse.

Glendale Courthouse

Glendale is located just northeast of Downtown Los Angeles. But, directly north of Los Angeles in the amount of traffic court cases heard. The seemingly docile city is bursting with drivers who commit traffic violations. As a result, the Glendale Courthouse sees an abundance of testifying citizens every day.

Santa Barbara Superior Court

The Santa Barbara Superior Court will get flooded with traffic violators willing to take their chance contesting a ticket in court, especially from the Santa Maria area. The smaller city may not have a lot of residents compared to other areas on this list, but they have just as many speeders. When those guys get busted, they all get funneled through Santa Barbara.

Alameda County Berkeley Courthouse

South of Oakland and east of San Francisco is the wonderful town of Berkeley. It’s most famously known for its prestigious university and beautiful bay location. The campus brings thousands of genius minds, inspiring artists, and reckless drivers inside court doors to duke it out with a traffic judge. It could also just be the law students trying to get their reps in traffic court before they represent a client in the real world.

West Covina Superior Courthouse

The West Covina Superior Courthouse is no stranger to the onslaught of traffic violation disputes. At times, this space could seem like a revolving door of people addressing the obvious guiltiness of their tickets and trying to squeeze out of a fine payment. No matter how many people make it through the doors of this court, only a lucky few will escape it without payment.
